Safety and screening
Your Safety Comes Before Everything
Ayahuasca and master plant dietas are powerful. Some medications and health conditions make them dangerous. Every participant is screened before acceptance.
Medications That Interact with Ayahuasca
Ayahuasca contains MAO inhibitors, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal reactions with other substances. You must tell us about every medication and supplement you take. Do not stop a prescribed medication without your doctor's guidance.
- Antidepressants, including SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, and tricyclics
- Lithium and some other psychiatric medications
- Stimulants, including ADHD medications and some decongestants
- Tramadol and some other pain medications
- St John's wort and some other herbal supplements
- Recreational drugs, especially MDMA, cocaine, and amphetamines
This list is not complete. We will review your medications with you during screening.
Health Conditions
Ayahuasca and dietas may not be safe for people with:
- A personal or family history of psychosis, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder
- Heart conditions or high blood pressure
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Epilepsy or a history of seizures
How Screening Works
Before acceptance, every applicant completes a health questionnaire and talks with us about their physical and mental health, medications, and reasons for coming. We may ask you to speak with your doctor. If it is not safe for you to attend, we will tell you honestly.
The nearest hospital is over 40 minutes away, so we will not take any risks with anyone's health or safety. No exceptions. If you have any contraindicated health conditions or medications, it is your duty to inform us. If you lie, you could die.
In some cases, a condition may even be treated with certain plant treatments, and the participant may then be cleared for ceremony.
What Plant Medicine Is and Is Not
The dieta is a traditional practice of learning and healing. It is not a replacement for medical or psychiatric treatment, and we do not promise that it will cure any illness.
Ask a Question or Apply
Places are limited and every participant is screened for safety first. Write to us with a little about yourself, your experience with plant medicine, and which program you are interested in.
