Master plant dietas

Diet a Master Plant with Don Wilder Mahua

For students who want to come for a dieta without joining the full apprenticeship. Stay in the forest near Iquitos and diet a plant under the care of a Shipibo curandero.

What Is a Master Plant Dieta?

A master plant dieta is the traditional way a curandero builds a relationship with a plant teacher. Over a period of days, weeks, or months, the student sets aside the ordinary world and enters into a close, disciplined relationship with one plant, its spirit, and the teachings it carries.

Fasting, Extracts, and Plant Baths

The dieta includes periods of fasting and the drinking of pure extract made from the plant. The student also bathes in plant baths, to bathe in the essence of the plant.

The Traditional Diet

The food of the dieta is very simple: the traditional Shipibo dieta involves just a small fish called boé (boquichico in Spanish) and plantains each day, or a vegetarian or vegan dieta of quinoa, lentils, potatoes, and a select few types of vegetables. The student abstains from salt, oil, sugar, sex, soap, shampoo, toothpaste, and more.

In longer dietas there are periods of descanso (rest), during which the dietero will not be taking extract of their plant, so certain other foods may be added to help the body recover and prepare for the next round of extract.

Why We Diet

We do this to invite the spirit of the plant to cohabitate our body, so that we may receive its teachings. We sit in many periods of isolation and silence, singing to the plants and praying to them for their wisdom and teachings. The plants heal us, teach us, and bestow upon us their medicine. They teach us how to sing, how to work in and out of ceremony, and about ourselves.

The Tests of the Dieta

There are many tests in the dieta, in which we are tempted to do things contrary to the diet. The plants test us, and they teach us when we mess up. When we mess up badly enough, it may even "cross" the diet.

For these reasons, it is so important to learn under a maestro who understands how to hold, clean, and fix our dietas, until we learn how to do these things ourselves.

The Don of the Plants

Throughout the dieta, and especially upon its completion, one receives the don of the plants: their gifts and blessings, bestowed upon us and our path.

How Long to Diet

For the first dieta with any plant, it is customary within the tradition to do a dieta of three months in order to establish a strong connection with this plant. This is not necessary with Noya Rao.

However, we understand that, for many, this is not feasible. So, we offer shorter term dietas for certain plants, while some plants carry a strict minimum of three months.

Don Wilder will assist you in the process of choosing your plant dieta.
